Why

The Neon Guild is an association of technology professionals in Charlottesville/Albemarle and beyond. 

We started The Neon Guild in 1996. The internet was taking off like a rocket. There was lots of VC money here, there were tons of great-paying jobs to be had, and it was such an exciting time to be at the start of it. It was Jack Smith's idea to host a weekly gathering of tech folks, mainly to try to get subcontractors for his new company. To entice people to come, free pizza and beer were offered.

From those gatherings, a community was formed. We decided early on that it was better to collude rather to compete because in a town this small it was highly likely we were all going to be working either for or with each other at some point so it was probably better to know everyone.

We made an intentional decision to keep the structure loose. No dues or fees, no board, no committees or sub-committees. Just us. It was also intentional that our group was going to meet in person and have a discussion list to supplement, and that everyone would be posting under their real name. That was key, I think.

I've tried to keep a steady hand on the wheel coordinating the meetings, moderating the list and mentoring and connecting when I could be useful. 

Three decades later, we feel like we accomplished our purpose—to provide a supportive community for anyone interested in technology in our town. 

The pandemic put a stop to our in-person gatherings, and we never did figure out how to get another suitable venue. Now, many of us are at the end of our careers, have retired or are close to retiring. It amazes me that there are still over 400 members on our list, so we must have done something right.

Do all good things have to come to an end? 

In our case, yes. We've been talking for a while about shutting down The Guild, but now, our host has decided to discontinue the discussion list feature, so that's kinda that. It's time.

We'd like to go out on a high note. We're going to host one last Neon Guild Cookout at McIntire Park on Sunday, June 28, 2026 at 1pm. In the picnic shelter. Rain or shine. Burgers, dogs, veggie burgers, all sides, all the beverages, all for free. Jack will man the grill, as usual.
